With July 4th festivities in high gear, it feels fitting to watch a musical about the American Revolution. Featuring the original Broadway cast, Hamilton will start streaming on Disney+ this Friday, July 3. (Yes, we’re counting down the hours.)
My kids (ages 9 and 12) did not have the opportunity to see it on Broadway before the pandemic, but we will be glued to our couch on Friday! Our “official” preparation includes:
- Listening to the Hamilton Original Broadway Cast Soundtrack (on repeat).
- Reading books on Alexander Hamilton. We found two great reading lists at The School Library Journal and The Card Catalog. (All ages are represented!)
- Taking Watson Adventures’ virtual tour of Hamilton’s life in NYC.
If the musical itself isn’t enough, we’re going to watch the newly-announced documentary with Lin-Manuel Miranda and his co-stars Daveed Diggs, Leslie Odom Jr., Christopher Jackson, Phillipa Soo, Renée Elise Goldsberry, and director Thomas Kail:
The cast and creative team will explore a wide range of topics, from the origin story of Hamilton; the Pulitzer-Prize winning musical’s earliest stages of development; their special connection to the show’s story, characters, imagery, and music; the show’s significance as a ground-breaking pop culture phenomenon; and what the Hamilton story means in the context of ongoing conversations about systemic racism and social injustice. They’ll also discuss the origins of and their hopes for the filmed version of the show.
Get the popcorn ready (you can even make it red, white, and blue!), because it’ll be a movie afternoon!
I'm a mom of two girls, ages 9 and 12. My daughters love to learn - math, science, reading and coding are their favorite things. Trying to navigate this "new normal" of parenting in a virtual world ... just like everyone else!
